BIKE SQUADS SAY 'I'LL BE THERE BEFORE YOU' ON RIDE TO WORK DAY

On Wednesday 18th July, hundreds of motorcycle and scooter owners across the country will be heading to work on two wheels as part of a national campaign from the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI).

Ride to Work Day, part of National Motorcycle Week, has been highlighting the number of motorcyclists in the UK and the social, environmental and economic benefits of two-wheeled powered vehicles since it was first launched in the UK, by the MCI in 1999.

This year, 'motorcycle squads' will be riding to work through major cities across the country, including Birmingham, London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cambridge, Stockton, Preston, Bristol and others, carrying messages on their high visibility vests to encourage their fellow commuters to join the two-wheeled revolution.

The squads are being organised and supported by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), BikeSafe, BMF, MAG and manufacturers including Piaggio, Honda, Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, BMW, Yamaha, Triumph and Suzuki.

MCI's Craig Carey-Clinch said: "We're hoping to raise awareness about the forthcoming 2DLD legislation (Second European Driving Licence Directive) and to promote the benefits of getting on two wheels in order to motivate those who don't have a full motorcycle licence to get one now.
"We recently commissioned a piece of research which highlighted the amount of time and money that people in this country waste driving to work in cars every day. The research also revealed that a fifth of British people are jealous of the motorcyclists who pass them in commuter traffic every day. The idea today is to persuade them that rather than sitting in traffic feeling jealous, they should take their bike test and join them!" The motorcycle squads will wear high visibility vests carrying messages including Stuck in another jam?...Fed up of traffic?...Wish you had a bike?...and I'll be home before you…all followed by the URL for the campaign's website takeyourbiketestnow.co.uk

The campaign has already received support from high profile motorcyclists including Olympic Gold Medallist, James Cracknell who commented:
"Since I started riding a motorbike in 1992, I've always enjoyed the sense of freedom it gives me. Apart from the obvious benefits of getting on two wheels, such as avoiding traffic and the London congestion charge, I really believe it makes you a better driver and road user. On a longer journey it provides some thinking time, with no stereo and no phone, which has always been a great release for me, especially when I was training as a sportsman. Former gladiator and current motorcycle journalist, Jane Omorogbe, will also be supporting the campaign. As the motorcycle correspondent for the Sunday Times, The Sun, the Press Association and the grid and pit lane reporter for ITV1's coverage of the British Superbike Championship, she is perfectly placed to promote the benefits of getting on two wheels and will be conducting a series of radio interviews on Ride to Work Day. Jane Omorogbe commented: "I got into biking because I was jealous! Jealous of all the freedom my mates enjoyed and of the extra free time they'd salvage from each day just by riding to work and back. Why sit in frustrating traffic when you can nip by, inoffensively and unobtrusively, and arrive on time or early! "Not only that, it's fun, and turning an otherwise mundane journey into a mini adventure grabs my attention any day of the week. If you've yet to get a bike license, why not take advantage of Ride to Work Day and grab a pillion ride with a mate. You’ll see it makes perfect sense!”

The MCI's 'Motorcycle Squads' will be riding their bikes in a number of locations across the UK on Ride to Work Day (18 July 2007). Come along to any of the venues below on the 18th July for photo or interview opportunities
